Casuarina cunninghamiana, also known as river oak or river she-oak, is a hardwood species native to Australia that has been used for making acoustic guitars. It has a number of properties that make it a viable option for guitar making.
One of the main reasons why Casuarina cunninghamiana is good for making acoustic guitars is its density. It is a relatively hard and dense wood, which can help to produce a clear and bright tone with good sustain. This is particularly useful for guitar tops and backs, where tonal clarity is especially important.
In addition to its tonal properties, Casuarina cunninghamiana is also known for its stability. It is resistant to humidity changes and can maintain its shape and tone even in varying environmental conditions. This can help to prevent warping or cracking over time.
David from Australian Guitar Timbers mills all his logs, which sit in strip and air dry for at least two years before being cut into blocks. The timber is placed in a Solar or Electric Kiln and dried further to between 8 and 10 percent moisture content. Nearly all of David’s logs are sourced locally here in Queensland except for the Tasmanian Timbers. Rather than trees being sent to be chipped they are saved and collected to be repurposed.
