Description

Silver quandong is a type of wood that is commonly used for making acoustic guitar soundboards due to its unique properties. The wood is native to Australia and has a number of qualities that make it particularly suitable for this purpose.

One of the main reasons it is used for soundboards is its high stiffness-to-weight ratio. This means the wood is relatively lightweight, but also very strong and rigid. This combination of qualities allows it to vibrate more easily, which is important for creating a resonant sound.

In addition, the wood has a uniform grain structure that helps to ensure consistent sound quality across the entire soundboard. It also has a bright, clear tone that is well-suited to a wide range of musical styles.

Finally, silver quandong is a sustainable wood source, which makes it an attractive choice for environmentally conscious guitar makers.

Overall, the unique combination of stiffness, weight, tone, and sustainability make silver quandong an excellent choice for acoustic guitar soundboards.

David from Australian Guitar Timbers mills all his own logs which then sit in strip and air dry for at least two years before being cut into blocks. The timber is then placed in a solar or electric kiln and dried further to between eight and ten percent moisture content. Nearly all of the logs David has are sourced locally here in Queensland except for the Tasmanian timbers. Rather than trees being sent to be chipped they are saved and collected to be repurposed. Australian Guitar Timbers sustainably collect wood and love that they can convert the timber into a much-loved instrument part.
