Why does Red New Guinea Rosewood make good acoustic guitar soundboards?

Red New Guinea Rosewood is a type of wood that is highly valued in the guitar-making industry for its unique tonal properties, making it an excellent choice for acoustic guitar soundboards. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Resonance: It has a high stiffness-to-weight ratio, which means it is both strong and lightweight. This quality allows it to vibrate freely and produce a bright and responsive tone, with a rich and balanced sound.
  2. Stability: Red New Guinea Rosewood is known for its stability and resistance to warping and cracking over time. This is important in guitar soundboards, as the wood must be able to withstand the tension of the strings over long periods.
  3. Density: The high density of this wood gives it excellent sustain, which means that the sound produced by the guitar will continue to ring out even after the string has been plucked. This is important for creating a warm and full-bodied sound.
  4. Durability: The durability of Red New Guinea Rosewood makes it resistant to wear and tear, making it a long-lasting material for use in guitar soundboards.

Overall, the unique combination of resonance, stability, density, and durability make it an excellent choice for acoustic guitar soundboards, producing a rich and full-bodied tone that is highly prized by musicians and guitar makers alike.

David from Australian Guitar Timbers mills all his own logs which then sit in strip and air dried for at least two years before being cut into blocks. The timber is then placed in a Solar or Electric Kiln and dried further to between 8 and 10% moisture content. Nearly all of the logs David has are sourced locally here in Queensland with the exception of the Tasmanian Timbers.  Rather than trees being sent to be chipped they are saved and collected to be repurposed. Australian Guitar Timbers collects timber in a sustainable way and loves that they can convert the timber into a much loved instrument part.
