Bunya pine is a coniferous tree native to Australia. Guitar makers increasingly use its timber for acoustic guitar soundboards because of its distinctive tonal properties.

Bunya pine’s lightweight structure allows the soundboard to vibrate freely, producing a warm, rich, and responsive tone. Its excellent stiffness-to-weight ratio also makes it well suited to acoustic soundboards.

The timber produces a distinctive tonal character, with bright, focused mid-range frequencies and a warm low-end response. It delivers clear, articulate notes with excellent sustain and projection.

Bunya pine also offers practical advantages for guitar makers. Its workable nature makes it relatively easy to shape and build with, while its stability helps reduce the risk of cracking or warping over time. These qualities help luthiers achieve a reliable, consistent sound in their instruments.

Overall, bunya pine combines distinctive tonal qualities, a lightweight and stiff structure, and good workability, making it an excellent choice for acoustic guitar soundboards.

Medullary rays occur in many types of timber. These structures consist of radially arranged living cells that extend from the pith (the centre of the tree) towards the outer edges, running perpendicular to the growth rings.

David from Australian Guitar Timbers mills all his logs, which sit in strip and air dry for at least two years before being cut into blocks. The timber is placed in a Solar or Electric Kiln and dried further to between 8 and 10% moisture content. Nearly all of David’s logs are sourced locally here in Queensland except for the Tasmanian Timbers.  Rather than trees being sent to be chipped they are saved and collected to be repurposed. Australian Guitar Timbers sustainably collect wood and love that they can convert the timber into a much-loved instrument part.
